sound futures  is Birmingham’s Youth Music Action Zone. We help children and young people make music in areas where there where few or no such opportunities before. We are one of twenty two Youth Music Action Zones funded by The National Foundation for Youth Music.

Run in partnership between mac and Birmingham City Council, sound futures commissions music leaders and arts organisations to deliver cutting-edge music programmes. Working in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the city, sound futures has a reputation and track record for high quality music-based project work with young people.

Key achievements

  • being awarded grants to the value of almost £2 million.
  • creating opportunities for over 13,500 children through commissioning cutting-edge music projects.
  • providing training opportunities for over 200 aspiring music leaders.
  • influencing music education policy at local, national and international levels
  • bringing together the formal and informal music sectors in the city by working with Birmingham Music Service, Birmingham Conservatoire, local orchestras and the wider further education sector.

About Youth Music

Youth Music is one of the National Lottery’s great success stories - a charity established in 1999 with a remit to support music-making activities for some of the UK’s most disadvantaged young people. In just ten years‚ they have reached over 2 million children and young people‚ encouraging their talents‚ building their confidence and transforming their lives through the power of music.
