mac presents the The City Sings

As our lead organisation, mac build towards their reopening in 2010, six artists have been commissioned to create work that will engage with the environment and audience around the new building. ‘The City Sings’ will be an anthem for mac that will ring out across the city, played and sung by people from all backgrounds and of all ages.

The featured artist for ‘The City Sings’ is composer Helen Ottaway who will work with professional and amateur musicians and with the communities of Birmingham to produce a multi-layered work involving music, sound, video and text.

The piece will gradually take shape over time, originating from and bringing together diverse communities around Birmingham. The elements will be played, rung and sung across the city and come together in a live performance to launch the new mac building in 2010.

The first chance to hear the ‘The City Sings’ will be when the opening section is premiered on the Bournville Carillon in Bournville Park on Saturday 1st August as part of our Site and Sounds summer programme of free events. We will be holding a reception where people can learn more about the project and share their reactions to the piece.
